Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education has launched the National Numeracy Movement to boost Indonesia's Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) score in accordance with the 2025-2029 National Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMN).

Primary and Secondary Education Minister Abdul Mu'ti noted that the movement has been launched as a joint effort to improve the numeracy skills of Indonesian children, which, according to the PISA score, remain far from the target.

"Specifically, this movement aims to improve the PISA score," he highlighted at the launch event in West Jakarta on Tuesday.

Mu'ti explained that developing children's numeracy skills is essential because the skills help them develop other abilities.

"Almost all fields of study require mathematics, require numeracy skills," he pointed out.

The ministry's Director General of Teachers, Educational Staff, and Teachers' Education, Nunuk Suryani, added that the movement's launch is also marked by the inauguration of Numeracy Parks at 140 schools in 16 provinces and 13 villages.

The ministry has designed several activities as part of the National Numeracy Movement, among others, podcasts, teachers' training, and publishing numeracy books for families.

She affirmed that the movement is carried out not only in cities but also in villages.

In the 2025-2029 RPJMN, Indonesia's PISA score target is set at 409 for reading and 419 for mathematics.

In the 2022 PISA, Indonesia's overall score stood at 1,108: 366 for mathematics, 383 for science, and 359 for reading.
