Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto on Friday called on teachers to play a key role in breaking the cycle of poverty by providing quality education to the nation's youth.

Speaking at a briefing for Sekolah Rakyat (People's School) teachers and principals in Jakarta, Prabowo said the responsibility of educators is critical to lifting future generations out of poverty.

"You've been carefully selected. Your mission is noble—helping children lift their families out of poverty," he told hundreds of teachers at the JIExpo Kemayoran.

President Prabowo called on all parties to work hard to eradicate poverty in the country. Sekolah Rakyat, he said, is the beginning of efforts to realize such a future.

The president admitted that he felt proud when he saw the students of Sekolah Rakyat with their parents and families.

The president saw that the students no longer seemed worried about their future. Instead, they seem optimistic about their better future, he said.

"Educate your students. Educate them well! Help them! Make them happy! Don't make them pessimistic, make them happy! The Indonesian people are happy! That's Indonesia," he stressed.

In front of the teachers, the president again encouraged all parties to remain optimistic that Indonesia is capable of becoming an independent and self-reliant nation.

He said that the meaning of independence is when all the people are prosperous.
