Jakarta (ANTARA) - Sovereign wealth fund Danantara has announced a partnership for a nickel project valued at an estimated US$1.42 billion with GEM Limited, a global company from China specializing in green metallurgy and circular economy solutions.

The collaboration was formalized through the signing of a Head of Agreement (HoA), outlining a framework for potential joint investment in a High-Pressure Acid Leach (HPAL) smelting facility, planned to produce 66,000 tons of nickel in mixed hydroxide precipitate per year.

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Danantara, Rosan Roeslani, stated in an official statement in Jakarta on Wednesday that the partnership with GEM Limited marks a significant milestone in the agency’s mission to catalyze strategic investments that accelerate Indonesia’s socio-economic transformation.

He noted that partnering with a global pioneer in green metallurgy enables Indonesia to advance its downstream industrialization agenda while prioritizing sustainability and innovation.

“The integration of research and development, green energy, and closed-loop recycling reflects the type of high-impact project that will generate long-term value for both Indonesia and our investment partners,” Roeslani said.

The nickel project is expected to involve collaborations with PT Vale Indonesia Tbk (INCO) and other global partners.

Indonesia has been actively pursuing its Indonesia Green Industrial Park (IGIP) initiative, which aims to create up to 80,000 new jobs and deliver broad economic benefits over the next five years.

GEM Limited is also recognized for its strong commitment to human capital development. The company has invested US$30 million to establish a state-of-the-art metallurgical research laboratory in collaboration with Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), strengthening Indonesia’s position as a hub for research and development.

GEM has made significant investments in nickel-based new energy materials, including high-tech nickel industrial zones, joint innovation labs with universities across Indonesia, and scholarship programs that have produced master’s and doctoral graduates in metallurgy.
