Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Prabowo Subianto has been urged by former deputy foreign minister Dino Patti Djalal not to proceed with any overseas visit amid ongoing protests nationwide.

President Prabowo was invited by Chinese President Xi Jinping to attend the Victory Day Parade in Beijing on September 3, 2025. He was among the 26 heads of state and government invited.

"Considering the ongoing escalation and the people whose hearts are aching and restless, I suggest President @Prabowo to CANCEL his visit to China next week," Djalal wrote on his social media account on Saturday.

According to Djalal, Prabowo's presence in China can be delegated to his foreign minister, Sugiono, instead.

He believed that this time is the right moment for the president "to remain at home among the concerned people".

"Going for an overseas visit is not important right now," Djalal, who had served as Indonesian Ambassador to the United States, remarked.

A new wave of protest on Friday (August 29) engulfed various cities in Indonesia, including Jakarta, following the death of 21-year-old Affan Kurniawan, an online motorcycle taxi driver, who was run over by a police vehicle during a protest near the Parliament Complex on Thursday.

President Prabowo, on Friday evening, personally conveyed his condolences to Kurniawan's parents when he visited the family home in Menteng, Central Jakarta. He also promised to uphold justice for individuals responsible for his death.

Meanwhile, the president was invited to Beijing to attend the Victory Day parade organised to commemorate the 80th anniversary of victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.

The parade will feature new-generation military assets — including fourth-generation tanks, advanced fighter jets, unmanned intelligent equipment, and hypersonic anti-ship missiles — unveiled publicly for the first time.

All four service branches of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), along with its specialised forces, will participate in the parade.
