Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian national surfing team showed a promising performance in the first round of the 2025 International Surfing Association (ISA) World Surfing Games in La Bocana, El Salvador, on Saturday (September 6).

Of the six Indonesian athletes participating in the event, four have qualified for the second round, one has yet to compete, and the other must compete in the Repechage 1, or elimination round.

"The competition in Round 2 will be tougher in both the women's and men's events because Central and South America are sending their full teams," the Indonesian national surfing team head coach, Arya Subyakto, spoke to ANTARA on Sunday.

At the event, Dhany Widianto finished first in Heat 3 with a total of 7.87 points, ahead of British athlete Logan Nicol, Neil Sanchez from the Philippines, and Zebedee Bamford of the British Virgin Islands.

Meanwhile, I Made Pajar Ariyana was ranked second in Heat 7 with a total score of 8.57, competing alongside Arran Strong from England, Manoa Tarroux from Vanuatu, and Teshawn Jones from the British Virgin Islands.

Furthermore, Hairil "Oney" Anwar has yet to compete, and two female surfers, Kailani Johnson and Taina Izquierdo, have secured their spots in the second round.

Unlike her two teammates, Dhea Natasya was ranked third in her Heat, forcing her to compete in Repechage 1, the elimination round, to continue in the competition.

"The competition gets tougher every year, in both men's and women's categories," Subyakto noted.

"Especially since many European countries, which were previously underrated, are now strengthened by athletes of their descent with dual passports, residing in both North and South America," he continued.

The 2025 World Surfing Games features global top surfers, attended by 22 Olympic athletes, including Paris 2024 gold medalist Kauli Vaast from France and Tokyo 2020 bronze medalist Amuro Tsuzuki from Japan.

While this year's World Surfing Games will not feature a specific Olympic qualification scenario, the result will shape future seeding that could potentially impact athletes to qualify for LA 2028, according to the International Surfing Association.

The 2025 ISA World Surfing Games is being held in El Salvador from September 6-13, with the finals and closing ceremony on September 14.
