Malang, Jawa Timur (ANTARA) - Indonesia’s Social Affairs Minister Saifullah Yusuf said Monday the government has started using DNA-based talent mapping to identify and nurture the potential of students at its new public education initiative, Sekolah Rakyat or “People’s School.”

“This school uses a customized curriculum based on each child’s strengths. There are no academic tests — just talent assessments,” said Yusuf, also known as Gus Ipul, during a visit to SRMP 14, a pilot school in Batu City, East Java.

At SRMP 14, students undergo evaluations to identify personal traits and skills. For example, Naila, a seventh-grade student, was found to have strong critical thinking and attention to detail.

Another student, Love Sebening Wahid, showed traits like sociability, sincerity, problem-solving ability, competitiveness, and vision.

Yusuf said this approach helps teachers guide students toward careers that match their natural talents, such as engineering or healthcare.

He added that SRMP 14’s teaching and learning process is running well, with strong support from teachers, school leaders, and guardians. The school is being used as a model for other campuses across the country.

The Ministry of Social Affairs is also working to provide students and staff with the necessary resources.

Laptops are currently being procured, and all students at SRMP 14 have received eight different uniforms, including standard school attire, scout uniforms, lab coats, sportswear, sleepwear, and alma mater jackets.

SRMP 14 officially opened on July 14, 2025, using a facility formerly operated by the Child Protection and Social Services Unit. The school includes dormitories for boys and girls and currently hosts 150 students taught by 12 teachers.

The program is part of a broader effort to reform Indonesia’s education system by focusing more on individual talent and practical skills.
