Pontianak. West Kalimantan (ANTARA) - Deputy Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology Stella Christie emphasized that the establishment of Garuda Schools is part of President Prabowo Subianto’s strategy to accelerate human resource development in science and technology.

“President Prabowo sees that Indonesia’s science and technology graduates still lag behind other countries, including our neighbors. Therefore, a concrete strategy is needed to close this gap," she said during a working visit to Mempawah District on Wednesday.

She explained that Garuda Schools are designed to become top-quality senior high schools focused on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

The government will prioritize the construction of these schools outside Java Island. A total of 20 new schools will be built in various regions, including West Kalimantan, while 80 existing high schools will be upgraded under the Garuda School Transformation program.

“Talent exists across the nation, from Sabang to Merauke, but opportunities are not always there. Therefore, it is the government’s duty to create that access so that the best students from all regions can develop,” she said.

Garuda Schools are built on three core pillars. First, providing equitable access to quality education; second, serving as incubators for future leaders with global insight and local sensitivity; and third, balancing academic excellence with community service.

“These schools will gather students from diverse regions to learn and live together, and mutually respect diversity. They will be encouraged academically but still contribute to society, including through research for environmental solutions,” Christie added.

She also noted the schools will bring economic benefits by involving local communities in staffing and support roles.

Mempawah is one of the top candidates for a new Garuda School location, selected through a transparent proposal process.
