Jakarta (ANTARA) - The government will provide high-speed internet and Wi-Fi facilities to support the infrastructure needs of Sekolah Rakyat, a school initiative aimed at delivering education to underprivileged children.

Director of Digital Infrastructure Strategy and Policy at the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs Denny Setiawan stated on Monday that the ministry is working in collaboration with telecommunication operators to deliver Wi-Fi services to the schools.

He noted that the ministry is prepared to support teaching and learning activities at Sekolah Rakyat through the provision of fixed broadband connections, coordinated with the Ministry of Social Affairs.

In addition to infrastructure, the ministry will offer technical support to ensure internet connectivity not only in urban centers but also in remote areas where access remains limited.

“Major cities are relatively well-covered. What we need to focus on now is ensuring continuity and sustainability. This will require coordinated budgeting, planning, and governance with the Social Affairs Ministry,” Setiawan explained.

Regarding internet speed and service quality, Setiawan said discussions are ongoing with the Ministry of Social Affairs, including considerations around funding mechanisms.

He reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to continued collaboration with telecom operators to ensure infrastructure readiness at Sekolah Rakyat locations.

President Prabowo Subianto announced the expansion of education access through the establishment of 500 Sekolah Rakyat schools across Indonesia’s poorest regions.

Currently, 100 schools are operational, with the number expected to reach 165 by the end of September. These schools serve 15,895 students, supported by 2,407 teachers and 4,442 education personnel.

The program targets areas with the highest concentrations of poverty and focuses on reaching the lowest-income communities.
