Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Prabowo Subianto is preparing a Presidential Decree to establish the National Police Reform Commission, according to Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections Yusril Ihza Mahendra.

He said the commission is intended to formulate recommendations for changes in the National Police, which will later be submitted to the President.

"There is no target date for its formation yet, but the presidential decree has been prepared and will likely be issued within the next day or two," Mahendra said in Jakarta on Tuesday.

He explained that the commission will work for several months to finalize proposals on National Police reform, including a review of its status, scope, duties, and authorities.

Once the proposals are complete, the ideas for reform will be incorporated into a revision of Law Number 2 of 2002 on the National Police, he continued.

Mahendra noted that after more than two decades, the law needs to be reconsidered to reflect current conditions and growing public demands for police reform.

Earlier, President Prabowo was reported to be forming a commission to evaluate and reform the National Police, in response to public calls, including from the Gerakan Nurani Bangsa (GNB), a group of national and interfaith figures.

On September 11, the GNB conveyed civil society’s aspirations and demands directly to President Prabowo in a dialogue session attended by several Red and White Cabinet ministers.

"We conveyed the need for police evaluation and reform, which was welcomed by the President, who will immediately form a police reform commission. I think the public also demands this change," said GNB member Pastor Gomar Gultom after the meeting.

In the same press conference, Minister of Religious Affairs Nasaruddin Umar said that the aspirations for police reform presented by GNB had already been planned and conceptualized by the President.
