Erick made this statement when outlining his primary work focus following his inauguration to replace Dito Aryotedjo as Menpora by President Prabowo Subianto at the State Palace in Jakarta on Wednesday afternoon.
“As an aide to the President, I am fully committed, yet sometimes people forget the link between sports and youth. When we talk about youth, the Minister of Youth and Sports represents 131 million young people who will be the backbone of our nation going forward,” he stated.
The former Minister of State-Owned Enterprises (BUMN) expressed his commitment to carrying out President Prabowo Subianto’s mandate by focusing on youth development and strengthening national sports.
He stressed the importance of building young people’s capabilities to enable them to compete globally while fostering a deep love for their homeland.
“Our youth must be developed with capabilities to compete globally and cultivate patriotism. They must be an integral part of nation-building in the future. That is the essence of youth,” Erick said.
On another note, Erick highlighted the strategic role of sports as a unifying force for the nation and as Indonesia’s ambassador on the international stage.
“Sports are the nation’s ambassador to the world. We must elevate our dignity, pride, and strength as a nation,” he added.
Beyond achievements, he also underscored the economic potential of the sports sector through organizing competitions across various regions.
Looking ahead, Erick said the sports sector would be driven by numerous competitions both regionally and nationally as a means to stimulate economic growth and create job opportunities.
“This is a fundamental base, why humans need not only physical health but also mental well-being to build the nation,” Erick explained.
Regarding priority programs, Erick mentioned he would conduct a review after the official handover ceremony.
“The handover is tomorrow; after that, we will review the plans thoroughly. That is what we must do,” he concluded.
