Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Jakarta Provincial Government has called for stronger interregional collaboration in literacy, urging regions to move beyond promoting reading habits and focus on creating real impact for local development.

“Jakarta, as the national barometer, shows its inclusivity by sharing experiences and building collective strength with other regions,” said Jakarta Deputy Governor Rano Karno on Sunday at the 2025 Literacy and Climate Festival.

Speaking at the festival, held at Martha Christina Tiahahu Literacy Park in Blok M, Rano said the event reflects growing regional concern over literacy quality and climate awareness, while also showcasing Jakarta’s commitment to creating accessible public spaces.

“The presence of Literacy Parks symbolizes openness and hope. We strongly support collaboration, including with the Governor of Maluku. God willing, this will expand to other regions,” he added.

The festival was organized by the Heka Leka Foundation in partnership with the Australian Government, as part of a national agenda promoting literacy and climate awareness. Maluku Governor Hendrik Lewerissa also attended the event.

Rano noted that Jakarta and Maluku have a long-standing partnership across various sectors. Their cooperation in literacy, he said, goes beyond reading—it aims to drive mass movements and lasting social change.

“This event is just the surface. The collaboration has been active for some time. Governor Lewerissa even shared three books—Local Foods of Kei People, Climate Change and Our Earth, and Healthy Together in Facing Climate Change—as proof of this ongoing effort,” Rano said.

“True literacy means reading, writing, understanding, and taking action,” he added.

Focus on Equal Access

Maluku Governor Lewerissa emphasized his administration’s focus on ensuring equal access to literacy resources, both online and offline.

“The Maluku Government is tackling key challenges with tailored solutions. We are eager to learn from more advanced provinces and welcome this collaboration,” he said.
