Matta Cinema CEO and producer Nugroho Dewanto said the company's participation in Busan aims to open opportunities for international collaboration.
"Most of our projects target Indonesian audiences, but we are also seeking investment, distribution, and sales partnerships with companies from other countries," he explained.
Under the theme "True Stories of Indonesia: From Local Roots to Global Screen," the lineup includes three crime dramas developed in collaboration with Tempo Media Group.
All three are based on investigative journalism by Tempo Magazine and will be produced between 2026 and 2028 by Matta Cinema in partnership with Pal8 Pictures, a subsidiary of Tempo.
The first film, "Pintu Kanjuruhan" (The Doors of Kanjuruhan) depicts the tragedy at Kanjuruhan Stadium in Malang that claimed 131 lives. Directed by Razka Robby Ertanto, it is budgeted at Rp10 billion (around US$600,000).
The second, "Malam Alia" (The Longest Night), adapted from a bullying case linked to the death of a medical student in Semarang, will be directed by Pritagita Arianegara with a Rp10 billion budget.
The third, "Kampung Harapan" (The Village of the Hopefuls), addresses online gambling in Indonesia and will be directed by Garin Nugroho with a similar budget.
Beyond the three films, Matta Cinema announced "Rencana Besar Untuk Mati Dengan Tenang" (The Grand Plan for a Peaceful Death), an adaptation of an award-winning novel directed by ismailBASBETH, budgeted at Rp8 billion and set to begin production in November 2025.
Other projects include "Peristirahatan Terakhir" (The Final Resting Place), written by the late Gertjan Zuilhof and directed by ismailBASBETH with a Rp20 billion budget.
Another project is "Perjalanan Rasa" (The Unforgettable Flavors), inspired by the 1965 cookbook Mustika Rasa initiated by Indonesia's first president Sukarno. This culinary heritage film will be directed by Lasja F. Susatyo with a Rp12 billion budget.
The latter two projects are being developed with Ruang Basbeth Bercerita (RBB), led by producer Lyza Anggraheni, winner of the TAICCA Award at the 2024 ACFM Busan Asian Film School pitching project.
Matta Cinema, Pal8 Pictures-Tempo, and RBB can be found at Pavilion E26 and E27, hosted by the Jakarta government and the Indonesian Ministry of Culture, throughout ACFM 2025 in Busan.
