Jakarta (ANTARA) - French President Emmanuel Macron formally recognized the State of Palestine during a high-level United Nations conference Monday, drawing a standing ovation from Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and his delegation.

“The time has come,” Macron said at the High-Level Conference on Palestine and the Two-State Solution. “True to the historic commitment of my country to peace in the Middle East, I declare that today France recognizes the State of Palestine.”

Macron’s declaration was met with applause across the UN Assembly Hall, including from Palestinian envoy Riyad Mansour. President Prabowo and members of the Indonesian delegation stood in support following the announcement.

Indonesia’s delegation included Foreign Minister Sugiono, Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya, Human Rights Minister Natalius Pigai, and Investment Minister Rosan Roeslani.

In his address, Macron said France would open an embassy in Palestine “as soon as all hostages detained in Gaza are freed and a ceasefire is in place.”

He also voiced support for returning control of Gaza to the Palestinian Authority and restoring stability in the region.

President Prabowo also spoke at the event, condemning attacks on civilians in Gaza and reaffirming Indonesia’s long-standing support for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The conference, held during the 80th session of the UN General Assembly, was co-organized by France and Saudi Arabia. Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud represented Riyadh.

Leaders and representatives from 33 nations and regional bodies, including the European Union and Arab League, addressed the summit, calling for renewed international efforts toward lasting peace between Israel and Palestine.
