In a statement cited here on Wednesday, Baznas Head of Distribution and Empowerment Saidah Sakwan said the agency had immediately deployed personnel to affected areas after the flooding on September 8.
She noted that Baznas had been coordinating with the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) and local authorities to ensure that the basic needs of flood-affected residents are met during the emergency.
“Among the goods most urgently needed are ready-to-eat meals, toiletries, baby supplies, school equipment, piped drinking water, and emergency toilets,” Sakwan said.
She reported that the philanthropic agency had so far established two public kitchens in two hamlets of Sawu Village, Mauponggo Sub-district, with each serving 600 and 200 portions of ready-to-eat meals daily.
Baznas has also opened free medical service posts in Sawu Village and Lokalaba Village, Mauponggo Sub-district.
“So far, a total of 79 residents have undergone general check-ups, through which we diagnosed 40 cases of acute respiratory system infection, 17 cases of hypertension, 14 cases of dyspepsia, 12 cases of low back pain, and nine cases of myalgia,” she explained.
In addition, Baznas has distributed 30 packages of baby supplies and school equipment to flood-hit families.
Sakwan acknowledged that the agency faced challenges in distributing assistance, including poor communication signals, difficult road and bridge access, and limited availability of relief items.
She also called on the Indonesian public to contribute to efforts to address the impacts of the flash floods.
“This disaster reminds us all to care for one another. Baznas encourages all citizens to join hands in supporting our brothers and sisters in Nagekeo, whether through prayers or donations, so we can help them recover from this tragedy,” she concluded.
