Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Atip Latipulhayat said that through collaborative efforts over the past five years, Indonesia has reduced its illiteracy rate to 0.92 percent.

He made the statement during the 2025 International Literacy Day commemoration at the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education office here on Friday.

Despite the progress, Atip noted that several districts still require serious attention to completely eradicate illiteracy.

"The government is committed to not leaving anyone behind," he said.

This year’s International Literacy Day carried the global theme of "Promoting Literacy in the Digital Era." Meanwhile, Indonesia’s national theme was "Digital Literacy Piety Builds Civilization."

According to Atip, the themes highlight that literacy goes beyond reading and writing. It is a fundamental pillar in shaping a society that is intelligent, independent, productive, inclusive, and equipped with critical thinking skills.

"The themes are highly relevant to technological advances in the digital era. As we all recognize how fast technology is developing, digital literacy must be accompanied by the ability to use it positively to advance civilization," he said.

He further emphasized that the ministry is strengthening policies and programs to improve literacy nationwide, particularly in districts still facing challenges of illiteracy and limited access to education.

One initiative, he added, is the education digitalization program, which aims to enhance students' digital literacy through the distribution of interactive flat panels (IFPs) or interactive whiteboards to schools.

President Prabowo Subianto previously stated that the government targets the distribution of IFPs to 330,000 schools this year.
