Commission XI Chairman Mukhamad Misbakhun, whose committee oversees state finances, fiscal and monetary policy, and financial services supervision, said the move was appropriate and deserved support.
“In my view, Mr. Purbaya’s decision not to raise tobacco excise in 2026 is the right step and should be supported,” Misbakhun said in a statement in Jakarta.
He said the decision reflected the minister’s deeper understanding of the challenges surrounding excise policy and urged a comprehensive review of the regulatory framework on tobacco tariffs.

“Following this decision, I hope Mr. Purbaya will begin to re-evaluate the entire structure of tobacco excise regulations,” he added.
A full assessment, Misbakhun noted, is vital to curb illegal trade, sustain state revenue, and safeguard the livelihoods of millions reliant on the tobacco sector.
Earlier, Purbaya confirmed there would be no increase in tobacco excise tariffs in 2026 after talks with industry associations.
“So in 2026, we will not raise the excise tariff,” he told reporters during a media briefing at his office on Friday, Sept. 26.
He said the government considered the industry’s declining production and the growth of illicit cigarette circulation before reaching the decision.
