Sidoarjo, Jawa Timur (ANTARA) - Indonesia’s search and rescue agency (Basarnas) said on Wednesday that teams had identified 15 victims trapped beneath the rubble of a collapsed prayer room at the Al Khoziny Islamic boarding school in East Java, with several still alive but unreachable.

Emi Freezer, head of Basarnas’ Operations Guidance and Control, said eight of the victims were unresponsive while seven remained conscious.

“Of the seven, six are pinned near side columns that cannot be accessed directly or are in zone A2, which can only be reached through small gaps in the main column,” Freezer told reporters.

Another survivor was located near the main column, or zone A1, and remains responsive but unable to move after being trapped under a staircase landing, he said.

Rescuers are focusing on saving the seven conscious victims during the critical 72-hour period following Monday’s collapse, supplying them with oxygen, food and intravenous fluids.

Communication with the trapped victims has been maintained by voice, while special cameras are being used to monitor their condition through narrow gaps under the rubble.

So far, 11 people have been pulled from the debris. Three have died: one in hospital on Monday and two others on Tuesday.

Authorities have yet to confirm the total number of people still buried. Basarnas said the 15 victim locations identified so far do not necessarily represent all those trapped under the collapsed structure.
