Jakarta (ANTARA) - The government is targeting to finalize a presidential regulation (Perpres) detailing measures to strengthen the governance of the Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) program this week, Minister of State Secretariat Prasetyo Hadi stated.

"It should be noted that although the Perpres is still being formulated, the MBG program continues to run. The regulation is intended to help us improve the implementation of the free meals program to the best extent," he told the press.

Speaking at the National Monument in Jakarta on Sunday, the minister highlighted that various ministries and state agencies had been involved in drafting the executive regulation, which is being prepared in response to recent MBG-linked food poisoning cases reported in several regions.

"We at the government are working with the goal of making the program a success as its foundation. Hence, please give us time to devise effective measures to anticipate incidents as part of our efforts to evaluate and improve the program," Hadi said.

Alluding to growing pressure to halt MBG due to safety concerns, he emphasized that the government remains committed to sustaining the national program while pursuing necessary improvements.

"In principle, we do not intend to stop the program. Instead, we aim to address its shortcomings, as data has shown that most issues stem from failure to comply with pre-determined safety procedures," he affirmed.

In Jakarta on Friday (October 3), National Nutrition Agency (BGN) Head Dadan Hindayana noted that the upcoming Perpres would articulate the roles and responsibilities of ministries, agencies, and regional governments in implementing the MBG program.

He explained that as the primary executor, BGN holds the authority to make interventions when necessary, while the Ministry of Health will mainly oversee health and safety aspects.

The presidential regulation will also stipulate that the Ministry of Population and Family Development will distribute free nutritious meals to specific MBG beneficiary groups, namely breastfeeding mothers and pregnant women.

MBG primarily caters to the nutritional needs of children at elementary, junior high, and senior high schools.

Meanwhile, the Agriculture Ministry and the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries will guide farmers, ranchers, and fishers to boost production as food material suppliers for the program.

Furthermore, regional governments will be responsible for ensuring adequate supporting infrastructure.

Additionally, the upcoming regulation is expected to include technical provisions on food safety, sanitation, hygiene, and the handling of poisoning cases, among other measures.
