Foreign Ministry spokesperson Yvonne Mewengkang said after a bilateral meeting between the Indonesian and Dutch Foreign Ministers in Jakarta that Sugiono’s visit was made at the invitation of North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son-hui.
“The minister will hold a bilateral meeting with North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son-hui on October 11, with discussions covering various efforts to strengthen bilateral, regional, and global cooperation,” Mewengkang stated.
She added that the visit reaffirms Indonesia’s commitment to constructive dialogue and cooperation with various partners in the region, including North Korea.
In addition to holding a bilateral meeting with Foreign Minister Choe, Sugiono is also scheduled to inspect the Indonesian Embassy building in Pyongyang during his visit, Mewengkang noted.
She said the trip marks the first visit to North Korea by an Indonesian foreign minister since 2013, when then-Minister Marty Natalegawa visited Pyongyang from October 21–23 to discuss improving bilateral relations and stability on the Korean Peninsula.
The Indonesian Embassy in Pyongyang was closed in 2021 amid the COVID-19 pandemic and reopened in mid-2025.
Regarding bilateral relations, Indonesian Deputy Foreign Minister Pahala Mansury received a courtesy call from North Korean Deputy Foreign Minister Park Sang Gil in Jakarta on September 18, 2024.
During that meeting, the two deputy ministers underscored the strong historical ties that have been maintained since the era of President Soekarno and President Kim Il Sung and discussed ways to enhance cooperation across various sectors.
They also exchanged views on joint efforts to promote regional peace and stability and stressed the importance of dialogue and cooperation with ASEAN.
