Manado (ANTARA) - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has urged residents to remain calm after a 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck northwest of Karatung Island, Nanusa sub-district, Talaud Islands District, North Sulawesi, at 08:43 a.m. Western Indonesian Time (WIB) on Friday.

Coordinator for Data and Information at the BMKG Manado Geophysics Station, Muhammad Zulkifli, said the epicenter was located about 287 kilometers from the administrative center of Talaud Islands District.

He noted that the quake’s impact was more directed toward Mindanao, the Philippines.

Despite this, BMKG issued an early tsunami warning with an alert status for North Sulawesi and surrounding areas. The alert indicates a potential wave height of less than 0.5 meters.

Zulkifli added that the regions potentially affected include Talaud Islands District, which is closest to the epicenter, as well as North Minahasa District, Bitung City, and Manado City.

He emphasized that BMKG continues to update its tsunami early warning information and urged residents not to panic or believe unverified reports.

The public is advised to keep monitoring official information from BMKG, which will continue providing regular updates.

“People should not be overly concerned since the earthquake’s location is relatively far from Indonesian territory, and its impact on North Sulawesi is expected to be minimal. Hopefully, no tsunami will occur, especially since the status remains at the alert level,” he said.
