Jakarta (ANTARA) - Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni outlined key strategies Indonesia must undertake to establish a robust, inclusive carbon market ecosystem, including efforts to reforest 10 million hectares of degraded and critical land.

"To establish a robust, inclusive, and globally interconnected carbon market ecosystem, first of all, Indonesia needs to ensure a clear policy," the minister said at the Indonesia International Sustainability Forum in Jakarta on Friday.

Antoni emphasized that another vital strategy is synchronizing measurement, reporting, and verification (MRV) processes with global standards. Indonesia must also adapt to rapid technological advancements to attract major investors in green projects.

“The next step is to attract institutional investors to fund mitigation efforts based on nature-based solutions while achieving interoperability with the global carbon market,” he explained.

The minister expressed confidence that these measures would drive Indonesia's growth and position the nation as a global hub for sustainable carbon development.

Improving governance and regulatory frameworks could enhance the economic value of Indonesia’s forestry carbon assets, thereby advancing the country’s green development agenda, the minister added.

"Indonesia is now open to Nature-based Solutions, which are not only for carbon reduction activities but also for carbon removal initiatives such as afforestation, reforestation, and revegetation," Antoni elaborated.

His administration pursues these measures through three approaches: social forestry, conservation, and sustainable forest management.

President Prabowo Subianto has set a target to replant some 10 million hectares of degraded and critical land, Antoni pointed out.

"This takes significant effort and reflects Indonesia's strong political will to restore ecosystems and improve our carbon absorption," the minister said.

He stressed that collaboration from other stakeholders, including the private sector, local communities, and the general public, is crucial.

Antoni believes that through collaboration, economic value can be derived from forest-based carbon absorption.
