Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's Trade Minister Budi Santoso on Friday called on developing countries to accelerate sustainable industrialisation by prioritising three key areas of development.

Speaking at the second session of the G20 Trade and Investment Ministerial Meeting (TIMM) in Gqeberha, South Africa, Santoso said the first priority was to strengthen and utilise productive capacity to drive transformation toward high value-added, science-based industries.

“The second is to move up the global value chain by expanding the manufacturing base in strategic sectors such as semiconductors, electric vehicle batteries, and pharmaceuticals,” he said in a written statement released on Saturday.

The third priority, he added, is to build green industries to support a transition toward an inclusive and fair low-carbon economy.

Santoso stressed the need for stronger commitment to a just, inclusive, and sustainable multilateral trading system amid ongoing geopolitical and trade tensions.

He said developing nations must also reinforce domestic resilience to ensure strategic policies can respond effectively to global challenges.

“Economic strength must be built from within through sound policies, strong regional connectivity, and productive cross-border collaboration,” Santoso said.

He underlined that regional trade plays a crucial role in strengthening supply chains and expanding market access. In this regard, ASEAN has acted as an anchor of stability and a regional production base across several sectors, he said.

Santoso urged developing economies to stay vigilant and adopt the right policies to safeguard both national and global economic resilience.

“Amid global turbulence and economic pressure, hope is not a strategy — preparedness is the answer,” he said.

The minister’s remarks came as G20 members discussed ways to address supply chain disruptions, industrial transformation, and sustainable investment to bolster global recovery.
