Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian government has built 397 base transceiver stations (BTS) in Papua during the first year of President Prabowo Subianto’s administration, significantly expanding internet access in remote regions.

Communications and Digital Minister Meutya Hafid said on Tuesday that the towers have delivered connectivity to nearly 2,000 points across Papua, supporting efforts to strengthen infrastructure in underdeveloped, frontier and outermost areas, known locally as 3T regions.

“The digital infrastructure pillar must ensure continued development, especially in 3T regions. Some 397 BTS have been built in Papua, providing internet access to nearly 2,000 points,” Hafid said in Jakarta.

She added that the project has already helped communities, particularly students, by improving internet availability in areas that were previously unconnected.

The ministry plans to further expand coverage in the coming year, aiming to link more regions and reduce the digital divide.

Beyond infrastructure, the ministry has also launched initiatives in digital security and literacy during the first year of the Red and White Cabinet (KMP).

In the digital safety sector, the government issued regulation number 17 of 2025, which governs electronic systems for child protection (PP Tunas), alongside the content moderation compliance system (SAMAN). Both aim to shield children from harmful online content.

“We’ve reported 30,000 accounts to the Financial Services Authority (OJK) and taken down 3 million accounts linked to negative digital content,” Hafid said.

To improve digital literacy, the ministry is collaborating with online platforms and community groups to raise public awareness and skills.

With over 220 million internet users in the country, the government sees multi-sector partnerships as key to strengthening public capacity in the digital age.

“We are working with stakeholders and platforms to spread digital literacy across communities,” Hafid said.
