Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Minister for Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection Veronica Tan said the revitalization of Jakarta’s Old Town (Kota Tua) is expected to restore the area as an inclusive public space that celebrates the city’s diversity and creativity.

“Imagine Fatahillah Square not only filled with tourists but also storytellers, musicians, and children’s laughter. This is the spirit of a living city, where Jakarta’s diversity, creativity, and resilience grow together,” Tan said on Wednesday.

She commended the revitalization program launched by the Jakarta Provincial Government in collaboration with MRT Jakarta and other partners.

Tan emphasized that revitalization should go beyond physical restoration to revive the area’s social and cultural essence.

“Restoring the soul of Kota Tua is not just repainting walls or fixing roofs. It’s about reconnecting history with humanity, awakening meaning, and making this place breathe again,” she said.

She expressed hope that Kota Tua would serve not only as a transportation hub or tourist attraction but also as a creative and joyful community space for residents, artists, and children alike.

Recalling her involvement a decade ago in the Kota Tua Project with communities, cultural figures, and activists, Tan said she remained optimistic about the area’s revival through cross-sector collaboration.

Driven by a shared love of history and community spirit, she believes the preservation of Jakarta’s Old Town as a cultural heritage site can inspire future generations and foster sustainable urban progress.

“For nearly 500 years, this area has embodied a long and proud history that forms part of our national identity. Our responsibility is to pass on its spirit to our children, so they grow up proud of their history and culture,” she said.
