Jakarta (ANTARA) - Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita said the domestic industrial sector is ready to implement the national car project, one of President Prabowo Subianto’s key policies.

“The industry is ready. I’ve also spoken with the companies involved. The brand already exists, and I have met with the company representatives,” Agus said in a statement received here on Thursday.

He added that he has proposed the national car initiative be designated as a National Strategic Project (PSN) and has sent a formal letter to the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas) for consideration.

“Last week, I signed the letter addressed to the Minister of Bappenas,” Agus said.

According to him, granting the project PSN status would accelerate the implementation of Indonesia’s national car manufacturing program.

“With PSN designation, everything related to preparation, implementation, and commissioning can proceed faster, in line with the President’s expectations,” he added.

President Prabowo Subianto earlier announced that the government had begun initial steps to produce a domestically made car within the next three years.

“This is not yet an achievement, but we have begun the groundwork. We will have an Indonesian-made car within the next three years,” Prabowo said in his opening remarks at a plenary cabinet meeting at the State Palace in Jakarta on Monday (Oct. 20).

Prabowo said the government has prepared funding and land for a factory that will produce locally manufactured vehicles, with a development team already working on the project.

The President noted that Indonesia had successfully produced a locally made military jeep used by government officials and Indonesian National Armed Forces officers. The vehicle, he added, is a source of pride as it was designed and manufactured domestically.

The jeep referred to by Prabowo is the Maung light tactical vehicle produced by PT Pindad.
