Jakarta (ANTARA) - The governments of Indonesia and Brazil signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in Jakarta to enhance cooperation in the energy and mining sectors, including projects related to oil and gas resource management.

Indonesian Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia inked the agreement with Brazilian Mines and Energy Minister Alexandre Silveira, witnessed by President Prabowo Subianto and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva at the Merdeka Palace on Thursday.

"The signing of this MoU marks a highly strategic milestone toward a new chapter in cooperation between Indonesia and Brazil—two countries blessed with abundant natural resources," Lahadalia stated in Jakarta.

He described the pact as a reflection of both nations’ shared commitment to developing concrete and mutually beneficial partnerships in energy and mining.

Elaborating further, the minister noted that the MoU establishes a framework for Indonesia and Brazil to cooperate on advancing the oil and gas industry from upstream to downstream, promoting new and renewable energy, pursuing energy efficiency, and modernizing related infrastructure.

The agreement also opens opportunities for joint projects in mineral resources and human resource development.

Highlighting the two countries’ shared focus on energy transition, Lahadalia said the MoU is expected to drive collaboration in bioenergy development, citing Brazil’s status as the world’s second-largest ethanol producer.

"Brazil is among the global leaders in bioenergy, particularly in terms of ethanol production. We aim to use this MoU to promote technology transfer and best practices in a bid to advance our national bioenergy program," he remarked.

Beyond energy cooperation, Indonesia and Brazil also agreed to work together to enhance mineral resource management, with both being the world’s largest producers of nickel and niobium, respectively.

The MoU was one of eight cooperation agreements signed following a bilateral meeting co-chaired by President Prabowo and President Lula, who was on an official visit to Jakarta to reciprocate the Indonesian leader’s trip to Brasília last July.
