Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Jakarta provincial government is expanding and developing green open spaces (RTH) that combine ecological, social, and educational functions.

On Friday, Governor Pramono Anung inaugurated the Kampung Kalibata Park in South Jakarta as part of these efforts.

Ecologically, the park features a retention pond and winding drainage channels designed to collect runoff water during the rainy season.

From an educational and biodiversity perspective, it includes various local fruit trees native to Jakarta and its surroundings to enrich urban biodiversity.

The park also functions as a "natural laboratory" for the community, allowing shared and sustainable use of the fruit trees' produce.

“So, this area functions as a water catchment space in case of flooding, as there is the Setu Babakan (site) located behind it,” he said.

The governor has instructed the Parks and Urban Forest Service to merge the existing Citra Betawi Child-Friendly Integrated Public Space (RPTRA) with the newly inaugurated green area, expanding the combined green space from 5,328 to 6,828 square meters.

Kampung Kalibata Park is equipped with supporting facilities such as a guard post, pavilion, picnic area, bioswale (a rainwater filtration system planted with vegetation), toilets, waste bins, and a viewing deck.

“These facilities will benefit nearby residents, especially those using the jogging track for social and recreational activities,” the governor said.

He noted that the Jagakarsa area has few public sports facilities. “This jogging track plays a vital role in encouraging people to stay active,” Pramono added.

The site was once a low-lying area prone to flooding during heavy rains. Through careful redesign, it has been transformed into an active park that maintains its hydrological function as a temporary water reservoir while serving as an inclusive and productive public space for local communities.
