Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto expressed support for the United States’ continued engagement with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), including its role in mediating the conflict between Thailand and Cambodia.

“This engagement is very positive for both ASEAN and the US. We are pleased that the US has helped mediate the conflict between Thailand and Cambodia,” Prabowo said during a doorstep interview on the sidelines of the 47th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday.

The Indonesian head of state also noted that the ASEAN Summit has delivered positive outcomes for the region.

“The results of this summit are very positive,” he affirmed.

Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet officially signed a peace agreement to resolve their recent border conflict.

The signing took place during the 47th ASEAN Summit at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC), Malaysia.

The signing was witnessed by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who serves as this year’s ASEAN Chair, and US President Donald Trump.

In his remarks during the ceremony, President Trump said that the Malaysian Prime Minister played a key role in bringing Thailand and Cambodia together for talks in Kuala Lumpur.

Trump noted that when the border clashes occurred, the US immediately reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining regional and global stability and peace.

He recalled reaching out to both leaders by phone while in Turnberry, Scotland, and holding several three-way and four-way calls.

According to Trump, both he and Anwar urged the two sides to choose peace over unnecessary conflict.

Following productive talks in late July, Thailand and Cambodia agreed to a ceasefire and to rebuild friendly, cooperative relations.
