Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has called on ASEAN member states to stay united as the world becomes increasingly fragmented and the global order grows unstable.

The President made the statement during the retreat session of the 47th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on Sunday.

In an official statement received on Monday, Prabowo began his remarks by underscoring that ASEAN’s unity and centrality form the main foundation for maintaining regional stability and independence.

“Unity and centrality are not just keywords. Without them, we risk being divided by greater powers,” he said.

Prabowo added that ASEAN’s strength lies not in confrontation but in its continuous ability to build constructive and inclusive engagement.

He further said that, through this approach, ASEAN has successfully overcome various challenges in the past through dialogues and mutual respect.

Addressing maritime security, the President stressed the importance of ASEAN’s collective voice in upholding the principles of international maritime law.

He encouraged the bloc to maintain a consistent stance in enforcing the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) 1982 and to work toward completing an effective and substantive Code of Conduct next year.

Concluding his remarks, Prabowo called on all ASEAN members to strengthen solidarity in facing emerging challenges.

He emphasized that ASEAN’s unity is not merely a slogan but a path toward a peaceful and prosperous future, reaffirming Indonesia’s commitment to pursuing peace, prosperity, and the welfare of its people.

The 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits are taking place at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Center (KLCC) from October 26 to 28, 2025, under the theme “Inclusivity and Sustainability.”
