Jakarta (ANTARA) - Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo said a cracked embankment in Kemang Village, South Jakarta, caused severe flooding in the area on Thursday.

“The Kemang Village embankment cracked and leaked, causing the Krukut River to overflow,” he told reporters at Jakarta City Hall on Friday.

The overflowing river flooded Kemang Raya Street through Thursday evening and spread into residential areas in Bangka and Pela Mampang.

Pramono said local authorities had been instructed to repair the embankment immediately to prevent future flooding.

“Otherwise, Kemang will continue to be flooded during heavy rain,” he added.

He confirmed that the Jakarta provincial government will continue normalizing the Krukut and Ciliwung rivers as part of ongoing flood control efforts in South Jakarta.

Heavy rainfall began Thursday afternoon, affecting several roads, including Jalan Raya Fatmawati and Cipete. Around 4:30 p.m., floodwaters submerged part of the road in front of ITC Fatmawati, disrupting vehicle traffic.

Transportation and police officers were deployed to manage the situation.

The Jakarta Metro Police Traffic Management Center reported a power outage at the Fatmawati-TB Simatupang traffic light at 4:22 p.m., warning motorists to exercise caution while officers addressed the issue.

The combined flooding and traffic light outage caused severe congestion from Fatmawati to the Antasari intersection, with drivers reporting delays exceeding 30 minutes.

Pramono also instructed the Jakarta Water Resources Agency to keep all water pumps on standby to quickly manage waterlogging and flooding.

These measures aim to reduce the impact of heavy rains on South Jakarta residents and maintain traffic flow in critical areas.
