“KPAI urges all parties to build early warning systems in schools and communities. Children showing changes in behavior, loss of motivation to study, or signs of severe stress must receive immediate attention and psychological support,” KPAI member Aris Adi Leksono said on Friday.
He explained that these systems rely on teachers, particularly school counselors, to proactively monitor students’ social and emotional well-being. Training for both teachers and peers is also essential to recognize signs of depression, stress, or withdrawal.
Leksono stressed that coordination between schools, community health centers (puskesmas), and relevant agencies is vital for children identified as high-risk. Data on attendance, behavior, and social interactions should be used as early indicators of mental health challenges.
“Initial psychological support should be provided through school psychologists or mental health professionals immediately after symptoms or risk reports appear,” he added.

He also highlighted the critical role of families, urging positive communication and spiritual guidance to support the child’s recovery.
The commission’s call follows two suspected student suicides in Sawahlunto, West Sumatra, and Sukabumi, West Java.
“These tragic incidents serve as a serious warning for the education sector and families to be more sensitive to children and adolescents’ mental health,” Leksono said.
KPAI has previously emphasized the importance of early detection and rapid response in bullying cases. Timely identification and intervention are key to minimizing harm to victims and addressing harmful behaviors.
The commission’s recommendations aim to strengthen preventive measures across schools and communities, ensuring at-risk children receive timely psychological support and protection.
