Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) is encouraging the strengthening of a disaster-aware culture as part of a strategy to build national resilience in the face of various disasters in the country.

BNPB Head Suharyanto underlined that the nation's resilience in facing disasters is determined not only by technical and infrastructure readiness but also by a resilient community, social solidarity, and strong leadership at every level.

"Resilience in facing disasters is not only about technical readiness but also about mental, solidarity, and solid leadership at every layer of society," he said at the National Resilience Institute (Lemhanas) education program event here on Friday.

In his presentation, Suharyanto explained that Indonesia is one of 35 countries with the highest levels of disaster risks in the world.

According to him, the geographical and geological conditions place the majority of Indonesia's territory as disaster-prone, encompassing hydrometeorological, geological, and non-natural disasters.

The BNPB recorded that during the period of 2021–2025, there has been a decrease in the number of fatalities and economic losses due to disasters, with a decline of 93.49 percent and 79.76 percent, respectively.

This achievement is deemed a result of increased effectiveness in disaster management strategies and the preparedness of the government alongside the community.

He stated that in building national resilience, his agency continues to develop the Disaster Resilient Village (Destana) program, the Multi-Hazard Early Warning System (MHEWS), and Weather Modification Operations to anticipate hydrometeorological disasters.

"These efforts are accompanied by increasing the capacity of regional governments and strengthening synergy across ministries and agencies," he remarked.

Suharyanto also highlighted the importance of structural and non-structural mitigation efforts, as well as disaster risk-based spatial planning, so that events like the 2004 Aceh tsunami do not cause major casualties in the future.
