Denpasar (ANTARA) - Artificial intelligence (AI) has become a game changer in accelerating vaccine development and ensuring global preparedness for future pandemics, according to the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI).

"We see AI as a game changer in what we do," said Dr. Amadou Alpha Sall, CEPI Executive Director of Manufacturing and Supply Chain, during the 26th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Developing Countries Vaccine Manufacturers (DCVMN) in Denpasar, Bali, on Friday, October 31.

He underlined three key aspects of integrating AI in vaccine development: high-quality data, strong partnerships, and a global culture of responsibility.

Sall noted that AI depends on excellent data architecture, which enables better antigen design and practical use in manufacturing.

He said CEPI aims to strengthen pandemic preparedness tools that integrate AI alongside vaccine development.

“Having quality data and the right architecture focused on practical applications is something we have already started at CEPI,” he said.

The second aspect, he continued, involves building public-private-philanthropic partnerships to address shared challenges in research, development, and manufacturing. Such collaborations, he added, can help identify key factors that facilitate AI adoption in the vaccine industry.

The final point, Sall emphasized, is ensuring responsibility while driving innovation. He said AI presents both risks and opportunities that must be managed through global standards of equity and inclusivity.

"It is essential to embed biosecurity and quality by design in any AI project to maximize benefits and manage risks properly," he said.

The 26th DCVMN meeting gathered vaccine manufacturers and stakeholders from developing countries to discuss strategies for building a more resilient global vaccine ecosystem.

Established in 2000, DCVMN brings together 46 vaccine manufacturers from 17 countries across Asia, Africa, Europe, and Latin America, including Indonesia, India, Senegal, Brazil, and Thailand.
