"Indonesia's active role will prove significant in promoting a ceasefire and fair dialogues," Deputy Chairman of DPR's Commission I Sukamta remarked in a statement cited in Jakarta on Thursday.
The lawmaker made the appeal following the Sudanese government’s proposal to involve Turkiye and Qatar as mediators in peace talks between its military and the paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
His statement also came in response to recent remarks by Sudanese Ambassador to Indonesia Yassir Mohamed Ali, who expressed Sudan’s eagerness in pursuing more inclusive mediation efforts.
Sukamta noted that Indonesia holds a strategic position and strong diplomatic credentials that could meaningfully contribute to peacebuilding efforts in the African country.
"Indonesia is known for its vast experience in international diplomacy, its commitment to peaceful conflict resolution, and its solid partnerships with countries in the Middle East and Africa," he emphasized.
He underscored that Indonesia’s potential engagement aligns with its long-held independent and active foreign policy doctrine, as well as the 1945 Constitution’s mandate to contribute to global peace.
"We in the Commission urge the Foreign Affairs Ministry to use both bilateral and multilateral diplomatic channels," Sukamta stated, urging the government to leverage its influence within the United Nations, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
He expressed confidence that Indonesia can help pave the way for inclusive mediation and urge warring parties to respect and guarantee the rights of the people of Sudan.
He also warned of the worsening humanitarian crisis in Sudan, where the civil war, which broke out in April 2023, has displaced millions and deprived civilians of safe access to basic needs.
"Protecting civilians must be a top priority. Indonesia can play a constructive role as a trusted mediator," Sukamta said.
Additionally, he called on the international community to align steps toward fostering lasting peace in Sudan.
