Toyota Tsusho, part of the Toyota Group, is a global Japanese trading and investment company.
Deputy Minister of Investment and Downstreaming Todotua Pasaribu said the company, a trading partner of state-owned tin producer PT Timah Tbk, plans to build a solder paste production facility in Indonesia.
The project is still in its early discussion phase and is expected to be developed in collaboration with Timah as the local partner, he added.
"Indonesia contributes about 18 percent of the world's tin supply, making it a key player in the global supply chain. With this strategic position, we have great potential to empower the electronics and automotive component industries," Pasaribu said.
More than half of global tin consumption is used for solder manufacturing, particularly solder paste — a vital component in the electronics, automotive, and solar energy industries, he added.
He noted that global demand for solder paste is projected to increase from 5,170 tons in 2024 to 6,300 tons in 2029.
In addition to tin, Pasaribu addressed TTC's interest in investing in the downstream copper sector.
The investment aims to secure copper rods used as raw materials for cables, whose demand continues to grow in line with the expansion of the global automotive industry, he explained.
"The government is ready to provide full support, from licensing facilitation and business ease to operational assistance," Pasaribu emphasized.
On November 7, he met with TTC officials in Tokyo to discuss investment plans in the two sectors.
Japan ranks as Indonesia's fourth-largest foreign investor, with total investment reaching US$18.89 billion over the past five years, growing at an average of 12.4 percent annually.
The figure reflects the strengthening of economic relations and the two countries' shared commitment to promoting investment cooperation focused on downstreaming, green technology, and sustainable growth.
