“The Canadian Minister of Environment and Climate Change stated that she wants to collaborate to strengthen carbon-free policies. Therefore, Indonesia is considered a leader by our European partners,” said the Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq in Belem, Brazil, on Thursday (Nov 13).
He conveyed that after a bilateral meeting with the Canadian Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Julie Dabrusin, on the sidelines of the 30th UN Climate Change Conference (COP30).
Regarding carbon trading, Canada invited Indonesia to establish its own carbon unit scheme.
"This is certainly a good sign that the Indonesian government's efforts have received recognition and strengthening recognition from various countries in its efforts to establish a carbon credit scheme," Nurofiq said.
Regarding biodiversity, the two parties initiated biodiversity credits to generate economic value for biodiversity, and noted that Canada’s vast territory is also home to high biodiversity.
Nurofiq said that Canada is a large country, whose land area is almost four times larger than Indonesia, and its biodiversity is certainly no less impressive than that of Indonesia.
"Therefore, we will jointly initiate a kind of biodiversity credit to boost the economic value of biodiversity, which is currently still costly, and make it benefit-oriented," Nurofiq said.
The government continues restoring mangrove and peatland ecosystems while curbing deforestation, which has shown a consistent decline, improving carbon absorption and environmental stability nationwide.
These actions are supported by the expansion of the Economic Value of Carbon (NEK) and renewed international carbon trading mechanisms starting October 2025 to strengthen market-based climate financing.
