“This is not a formality, but a strong declaration of our shared vision, commitment, and action toward a digitally empowered Indonesia,” said Deputy Minister Nezar Patria on Saturday.
The announcement was made during the signing of a commercial agreement between SURGE, OREX SAI, and a local distributor. Patria emphasized that the collaboration represents a breakthrough in accelerating nationwide digital access.
The project leverages 5G-based Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) technology operating on the 1.4 GHz frequency—enabling rapid deployment of high-speed internet without the delays and costs associated with fiber-optic installation, which remains a major barrier in underserved regions.
“This is not just about connecting people. It’s about delivering affordable, high-speed access,” Patria said.
“This technology bypasses the traditional, costly, and time-consuming fiber-optic process.”
The initiative aligns with Indonesia’s broader strategy to close the digital gap and strengthen its digital economy.
Despite growing demand, broadband penetration remains low, and download speeds rank ninth among ten ASEAN countries. Fixed-internet costs also remain relatively high.
“The challenge is not only technical—it’s about digital justice,” Patria added. “Fast internet must not be confined to select areas. Through this collaboration, we aim to bring equal access to all communities.”
The project reflects the government’s commitment to building an inclusive digital ecosystem through public-private partnerships. Support includes access to critical resources such as the 1.4 GHz frequency band to advance wireless broadband services.
Direct beneficiaries are expected to include micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), remote education programs, and telemedicine services—sectors where connectivity can drive transformative change.
“We’re envisioning a future where seamless connectivity powers national progress,” Patria concluded.
