Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Prabowo Subianto on Monday announced a plan to replace traditional pedicabs across Indonesia with electric motorcycles, as part of a wider push to modernize transport and support the country’s industrial goals.

Speaking at the launch of a digital learning initiative at a junior high school in Bekasi, West Java, he said the government would launch a programme to ensure all pedicabs eventually run on electric motorbikes.

Prabowo also said the government intended to cap the age of pedicab drivers at 70, instructing ministers to draft measures to enforce the rule.

He argued that the effort was linked to broader ambitions, including preparations for Indonesia to produce its own national cars and motorcycles as part of the “Golden Indonesia 2045” agenda.

The president said Indonesia was ready to “rise and reach new heights,” positioning the country to enter what he described as a golden era.

Prabowo began rolling out the pedicab programme in July by distributing about 100 electric units to drivers in Sumenep, Pamekasan, Sampang and Bangkalan districts on Madura island, East Java.

He told a cabinet meeting on October 20 that the government aimed to begin production of a national car within three years.

He said budget allocations and land had been prepared for a fully domestic vehicle manufacturing facility.

Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita said on November 13 that production was expected to start in 2027, with state-owned defence company PT Pindad appointed as the lead developer.

Kartasasmita said discussions with Pindad had covered vehicle design, production technology, pricing, marketing and after-sales services.
