Jakarta (ANTARA) - The search and rescue operation for landslide victims in Cilacap, Central Java, was expanded on the fifth day of the emergency response period, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) said Monday.

BNPB Disaster Data and Information Center head Abdul Muhari said the expansion followed the discovery of several new locations suspected of containing victims.

The joint SAR team divided the search area into sectors to accelerate and streamline the evacuation process.

As of 11:00 local time, the team had recovered three bodies, bringing the death toll to 16. Seven residents remained missing and were still being searched for by the joint team.

The operation involves personnel from Basarnas, the National Armed Forces (TNI), the National Police (Polri), the regional disaster agency (BPBD), and volunteers, he added.

Evacuation efforts are supported by two additional units of heavy equipment from the district and provincial governments to clear debris from the landslide site.

Muhari said favorable morning weather allowed the team to continue operations, unlike previous days when rain and slick terrain caused delays.

Officers are also conducting manual searches in areas inaccessible to heavy machinery. The combined method is considered effective for locating victims in narrow spaces.

BNPB continues to monitor the operation’s progress and ensure adequate resources for the search and rescue efforts.

The landslide occurred on Thursday, November 13, at around 19:00 local time, affecting several homes in Cibeunying Village, Majenang Sub-district, Cilacap.

The disaster damaged 12 homes and threatened 16 others across an area of about 6.5 hectares. It also caused a 2-meter-deep subsidence and a 25-meter-long ground crack.
