Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia will send 12 boxers, including four former SEA Games medalists, to compete at the 2025 SEA Games in Thailand, aiming for at least one gold, officials said Wednesday.

“We will field 12 athletes - seven men and five women - our best talents trained extensively for the upcoming SEA Games,” said Hengky Silatang, secretary general of the Indonesian Boxing Association (Perbati).

The team includes four boxers with previous SEA Games success: Dio Koebanu (bronze), Asriudin Tapalaola (silver), and Maikhel Roberrd Muskita (gold in Vietnam 2021, silver in Cambodia 2023).

Female boxer Huwatun Hasanah, bronze medalist at SEA Games Cambodia 2023, will serve as the team’s most senior female athlete in Thailand.

Other team members earned medals at the 2024 National Sports Week (PON) in Aceh–North Sumatra and the 2025 Menpora Cup National Boxing Selection.

These include Vicky Tahumil Jr, Flanuari Daud, Gill Mandagie, Jekri Riwu, Merlin Tomatala, Israellah Saweho, Alfianita Manopo, and Nabila Maharani.

“With this team, our target is to win at least one gold medal at SEA Games 2025,” Hengky said.

The athletes have undergone long-term preparation through domestic training camps organized by Perbati before receiving government funding support.

Following this support, training extended overseas for three weeks each in Vietnam and Uzbekistan, he said, adding that sparring with Uzbekistan’s Olympic team proved highly beneficial for long-term development.

Hengky also noted plans to send the team to Thailand early for final preparations, including test matches, to address technical and non-technical factors that could affect medal outcomes.

Previously, Youth and Sports Minister Erick Thohir set Indonesia’s SEA Games 2025 target at third place, matching its Cambodia 2023 performance with 87 gold, 80 silver, and 109 bronze medals.

He said Indonesia must win at least 82 golds to secure third place.

Thohir acknowledged the target is challenging, as several events where Indonesia excelled in previous SEA Games are not included in Thailand.

He noted Indonesia lost chances for 41 golds due to the host country removing certain events, leaving an estimated 46 potential golds - far below the total needed to maintain third place.
