Jakarta (ANTARA) - Higher Education, Science, and Technology Minister Brian Yuliarto urged universities to strengthen educational transformation and accelerate development based on science, technology, and innovation.

The minister conveyed this at the meeting of the Council of Professors of State Legal Entity Universities (MDGB-PTNBH) at the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), Bandung, West Java, on Friday.

"We want our country to be on par with developed nations, with eight percent growth. Therefore, we need reindustrialization. We need the rise and advancement of our industries. Higher education is the pioneer of this," Minister Yuliarto said in a statement here on Saturday.

Minister Yuliarto highlighted that the adoption of AI across various sectors, particularly knowledge management, higher education, and materials research, has developed very rapidly and provided significant acceleration to the discovery process.

Nevertheless, he cautioned that AI must be understood critically so that it does not degrade students' analytical abilities.

He assessed that evaluations that encourage students' questioning ability, creative thinking, and higher-order thinking skills are necessary, as widely implemented in the world's top universities.

"AI is indeed very powerful. However, for people who do not understand AI, they will be trapped and controlled by AI. As a result, they will not be able to think critically, think analytically, or develop," he remarked.

In this regard, he urged universities to understand and optimally implement basic practices for utilizing AI.

The minister encouraged every university to share experiences in AI development with one another.

"We need to learn the basic practices, integration, and AI optimization for learning in universities. I think it will be interesting if every university can share its best practices with others," he said.
