"Every country should be able to determine its own development path. Partnership must create prosperity and empowerment," he stated after delivering remarks at the summit’s third session in Johannesburg, South Africa, on Sunday.
Gibran said that throughout the G20 sessions and sideline events, including a forum with CEOs, Indonesia consistently advocated for the interests of the Global South, particularly on economic justice and the right to development.
He noted that Indonesia has been "encouraging and initiating" messages on global economic justice and Global South interests for at least four years.
Gibran stressed that cooperation models that dictate or create dependency among nations must be rejected.
According to his office, the G20 Summit in South Africa adopted the theme "Solidarity, Equality, Sustainability," marking the end of the current series of developing-country presidencies.
The summit addressed diverse global challenges, with the first session focusing on sustainable economic issues, trade and finance for development, and debt burdens in developing countries.
The second session addressed resilience-building, disaster management, climate change, a just energy transition, and global food systems.
Gibran underscored the need for a fair and accessible global financing system, including debt relief and innovative financing mechanisms.
He highlighted Indonesia's success with its QR code-based digital payment system, QRIS, and encouraged G20 members to begin discussions on artificial intelligence governance.
Gibran also drew attention to humanitarian crises in Gaza, Ukraine, Sudan, and the Sahel, as well as the threat of hunger faced by millions, urging leaders to keep people at the center of global governance.
On the sidelines of the summit, he joined a meeting of the MIKTA group — Mexico, Indonesia, South Korea, Turkey, and Australia — and held bilateral talks with several national and organizational leaders.
