KAI Executive Vice President for Marketing and Business Development Krisna Arianto said repairs are being carried out by teams from the company’s North Sumatra regional division and its Aceh subdivision.
Speaking after dispatching an inspection train for the year-end holiday period at Jakarta’s Gambir Station, he said parts of the Medan–Binjai line were among the worst affected.
In North Aceh, floods washed out rail beds at 21 locations along the Krueng–Geukueh–Bungkaih stretch, and at three points each on the Bungkaih–Krueng Mane and Krueng Mane–Geurugok sections, disrupting services across the region.
Arianto said KAI President Director Bobby Rasyidin had flown to Sumatra to oversee the recovery operation and ensure repair work proceeds quickly.
“Railway recovery is ongoing, and we are committed to restoring services as fast as possible,” he said.
The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) said the floods and landslides have killed 631 people in Aceh, North Sumatra and West Sumatra, with 472 missing and more than 2,600 injured.
President Prabowo Subianto visited several disaster-hit areas on Monday and said the government would airlift supplies to isolated locations while ground access remains cut.
Authorities have also begun weather-modification operations aimed at reducing rainfall in the affected provinces.
