Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia is racing to restore telecommunications in flood- and landslide-hit areas of Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra as emergency teams struggle to reconnect millions of affected residents, Communication and Digital Affairs Minister Meutya Hafid said Thursday.

“Temporary connectivity via satellite — including SATRIA-1, Starlink, PSN, and others — has been deployed across impacted regions, including Aceh Tamiang,” Meutya said in Jakarta.

She said the government is working to fully restore services through multiple channels while instructing mobile operators to repair damaged networks as quickly as possible.

“We are still assessing where additional satellite support is needed while waiting for operators to bring their networks back online, especially in hard-hit parts of Aceh,” she said.

Meutya said the heaviest damage to telecommunications infrastructure, particularly Base Transceiver Stations (BTS), peaked on Tuesday (Dec. 2). Even so, she said connectivity has steadily improved over the past two days.

“If conditions continue to improve, it means electricity and fuel supplies are gradually returning. God willing, the situation will keep getting better. We are monitoring it closely, and we hope the next one or two days bring further stability,” she said.

She added that Starlink assistance has begun reaching disaster zones through various government distribution channels.

“We are streamlining the process now. As of December 1, we recorded 149 units, though verification is ongoing because emergency aid came through multiple government pathways. We are mapping the data, and so far there are around 150 points,” she said.

The ministry is also coordinating with mobile operators to accelerate recovery efforts.

“We have met with the operators and pushed for faster restoration. Many of their staff were also affected by the disaster, yet they continue working to speed up repairs,” Meutya said.

“We are maintaining momentum so conditions — especially in Aceh — keep improving in the next one or two days,” she said.

Flash floods and landslides struck the three provinces in late November 2025.

The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) said as of December 4 the disaster has killed 776 people, left 564 missing, and affected 3.2 million residents.
