The ministry's deputy for basic infrastructure coordination, Muhammad Rachmat Kaimuddin, said here on Thursday that spatial planning is an aspect which the ministry regulates. Moreover, his administration also coordinates the matter with regional governments, as regional people know the area better.
He reminded people that spatial planning is crucial because, for example, there are spaces which are suitable for housing, but at the same time the spaces have a risk of earthquakes and landslides.
Regarding the Sumatran disaster, he stated that currently the government is focusing on rescuing people. Once people are safe, Kaimuddin said, the government will move on to the next step, which is the construction of infrastructure that was impacted.
The Agrarian Affairs and Spatial Planning Minister, Nusron Wahid, has stated that his administration will evaluate the spatial planning of the region following the disaster which struck Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra.
Wahid stressed that the measure aims to ensure that the use of space is in accordance with the environment's characteristics, thereby minimizing the risks of disasters in the future.
"When the emergency response situation is over, we will evaluate the spatial planning. What (design) is unsuitable with the space's (characteristics), we will change it so it is more fitting," he said.
Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni has also stated that his administration has identified 12 legal entities which might have triggered a series of Sumatran hydrometeorology disasters across three provinces.
Antoni said in a meeting with the House of Representatives on Thursday that the ministry will take firm action against the legal entities immediately. The 12 companies, some of which operate in the Batang Toru area, show indicators of legal violations, he confirmed.
The minister said that, to date, the ministry's law enforcement directorate is still listing the legal entities linked to the flash flood and landslide which struck Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra.
