In a statement here on Thursday, he noted that the governments of West Sumatra, North Sumatra, and Aceh are currently in a difficult situation and require tangible support from other regions.
To this end, he encouraged regions with strong fiscal capacity to assist with disaster management.
He revealed that in the past few days, he had received reports from the leaders of the affected regions that their unpredictable expenditure budgets were starting to run low and were no longer sufficient to handle the emergency condition.
The minister highlighted that solidarity between regions is key to strengthening national resilience. Aid from other regions would greatly alleviate the burden on regions struggling to save their communities.
The Ministry of Home Affairs has also issued a circular that serves as a guideline for implementing the policy.
"We issued a circular letter on December 1st as a legal basis so that regional heads can provide grants or transfer aid on the basis of solidarity. I hope that during this time, regional heads will support each other," he said.
Karnavian also expressed appreciation for the regions that had already taken action. The Provincial Government of East Java, for instance, had already sent logistical assistance to the affected communities.
Floods and landslides recently hit Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra, following high-intensity rainfall.
The respective governments of the three provinces have declared a disaster emergency response status, effective from November 28 to December 11 for Aceh, November 27 to December 10 for North Sumatra, and November 25 to December 8 for West Sumatra.
According to data from the BNPB, as of December 4, the death toll from the disasters had reached 836, while 509 people were still missing.
