“National centralized training may take one to two years for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles,” he said during the send-off ceremony for the Indonesian contingent competing in the 2025 SEA Games at the State Palace here on Friday.
Thohir explained that President Prabowo instructed that 21 sports be designated as key medal contributors, which requires a longer preparation period. The adjustment aims to ensure that Indonesia’s leading sports receive consistent and adequate readiness for international competitions.
Regarding the 2025 SEA Games in Thailand, Thohir said the athletes are committed to representing Indonesia with their best performance.
“The Indonesian contingent is determined to serve as ambassadors who showcase our nation’s strengths,” he remarked before President Prabowo.
He added that the Indonesian contingent has been prepared to compete in the multi-sport event, scheduled for December 9 to 20, 2025.
This year, Indonesia is competing in 48 sports and has undergone centralized training for about two and a half months. Thohir also reported that the contingent consists of 1,021 athletes, making it the fourth-largest delegation after Thailand, the Philippines, and Malaysia.
He set a target for Indonesia to retain its third-place finish from the previous SEA Games in Cambodia, where the country secured 87 gold, 80 silver, and 109 bronze medals.
