Jakarta (ANTARA) - Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Abdul Mu'ti stated that several schools will need to be relocated from disaster-prone areas in Sumatra, following floods and landslides that struck the region.

The minister affirmed that he had coordinated with the Education Offices of Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra to compile data on the number of schools that have sustained heavy, moderate, and light damage.

"From the sites we visited, there are several schools that simply cannot be maintained in their current locations because they are in high-risk zones. Thus, we must build new schools in safer areas," he said in Jakarta on Sunday.

Regarding the exact number of damaged schools, he noted that the data still needs updating as conditions on the ground remain dynamic.

Furthermore, he explained that the learning systems in disaster-affected areas will be fully managed by local governments. During his visit to several sites, he observed various adaptive learning methods being implemented, such as shift-based classes and online learning.

"Regarding the technical implementation, we are not issuing a national mandate due to the diverse local conditions on the ground. We are leaving this to the regional governments," Mu'ti remarked.

According to a report by the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, as of December 1, the total number of schools damaged by the devastating disasters in Sumatra had reached 1,009: 310 in Aceh, 385 in North Sumatra, and 314 in West Sumatra.

Floods and landslides hit Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra in late November 2025 following high-intensity rainfall.

According to data from the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), as of December 7, the death toll from the disasters had reached 921, while 392 people were still missing.
