Jakarta (ANTARA) - Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Abdul Mu'ti encouraged Indonesian vocational high schools (SMK) to help harness regional agricultural potential to bolster national food security.

"We seek to further diversify vocational programs at SMKs, with a focus on agricultural competencies," he remarked during a symposium highlighting the connection between vocational education and food security in Jakarta on Monday.

Mu'ti noted that while many regions hold strong agricultural potential, a common perception persists among youth that careers in agriculture lack appeal. He believes vocational schools can help shift this mindset.

"I have learned that there is an SMK located near a tea plantation zone focusing on computer science instead of tea-related studies," he pointed out, noting the need to help students better understand their regions' potential.

The minister emphasized the importance of strengthening Indonesia's food security by enhancing the quality of vocational schools and attracting students to agricultural activities.

He expressed confidence that SMKs can play a crucial role in revitalizing the idea of full optimization of regional agricultural strengths, with the goals of boosting local food productivity and improving the welfare of farmers and other actors in the sector.

To that end, Mu'ti noted that his ministry has been implementing a program designed to guide SMKs in aligning their educational services with the agricultural and marine potential, as well as the social and cultural conditions, of their regions.

He also urged vocational schools to stay updated on technology to help students and alumni process and market agricultural commodities more effectively and efficiently.

Furthermore, Mu'ti voiced hope that the symposium would serve as a strategic venue for encouraging more SMK instructors and students nationwide to contribute to the development of Indonesia’s agriculture sector.
