Kota Jambi (ANTARA) - The Jambi Provincial Government and South Korea, through the Korea Indonesia Forest Cooperation Center, established a partnership to restore the Londerang Peat Protection Forest in Muaro Jambi as part of their sustainable forest management collaboration.

“South Korea has activities in Jambi, namely peat restoration in the Londerang peat forest area. This is concrete work that the community can directly benefit from; we have done a lot of work there,” said the Jambi Governor, Al Haris, in Jambi City on Wednesday.

According to the governor, the collaboration must be maintained to support environmental sustainability and the communities surrounding the protected forest area.

"Maintaining the restoration forest environment is part of our responsibility to ensure the ecosystem is well-maintained," he said.

The Head of the Jambi Provincial Forestry Office, Andri Yushar Andria, explained that the government-to-government cooperation between the two countries is part of their shared focus on environmental conservation.

The activities implemented under the agreement include reforestation in the burned areas of the Londerang peat forest, including the process of returning water to the dried peatlands by constructing infrastructure such as canal blocking (rewetting).

Andria explained that 19 local plant species are being developed at the site. These include the swamp pulai (Alstonia pneumatophora) and swamp jelutung (Dyera polyphylla), both of which are well-suited to wetlands.

In the first phase, the reforestation process covered 200 hectares, then will be expanded next year to cover 500 hectares.
